How to Use Network Diagnostic Tools for Extender Optimization

Check Connection & Public IP

Verify that your computer or smartphone is connected to the internet and check your public IP address and ISP details using our What is My IP tool. This confirms whether your router has an active WAN uplink.

Baseline Speed at Main Router

Run the WiFi Speed Test while standing next to your primary router. Record your baseline download speed and ping. This is your maximum achievable bandwidth.

Test Speed at Dead Zones

Move to the area where you plan to install your WiFi range extender (ideally halfway between router and dead zone) and run the speed test again to verify adequate signal (at least 50% baseline speed).

Frequently Asked Questions About Network Diagnostics

What is the difference between my Public IP and Local IP address?

Your Public IP address (e.g. 98.245.12.180) is the external address assigned to your modem or router by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). It identifies your home network to the wider internet.

Your Local IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.250) is a private internal address created by your router or extender DHCP server. Local IPs are only accessible within your home network and are used to open device admin settings panels.

Why is my WiFi extender speed slower than my router speed?

Standard single-band and dual-band WiFi range extenders typically cut your effective bandwidth by up to 50%. This occurs because the extender must receive data from your router and re-transmit it to your device over the same wireless channels (half-duplex re-broadcasting).

To maximize speeds, use Tri-Band Mesh extenders with dedicated wireless backhauls or connect your extender to the main router via an Ethernet cable in Access Point (AP) mode.

How does the What is My IP tool determine my location?

Our tool looks up your public IP address against global geolocation routing databases (GeoIP). It maps your IP block to your Internet Service Provider's nearest regional distribution hub, identifying your city, region, country, and approximate coordinates without accessing your device's GPS hardware.

Can I use my Public IP address to log into my WiFi extender?

No. Public IP addresses cannot be used to log into your extender admin dashboard. You must be connected to your extender's local network (via WiFi or Ethernet) and browse to its private default gateway IP (such as 192.168.1.250) or official web URL (such as mywifiext.net).
