Updating firmware helps keep your EX5000 secure, stable, and compatible with newer routers and devices.
Step 1: Download the Correct Firmware
- On a computer, go to the official NETGEAR Support / Download Center.
- Search for EX5000 and open the Downloads section.
- Download the latest firmware ZIP file for EX5000 and save it.
- Unzip the ZIP file and locate the firmware file (typically ending in
.chkor.img).
Step 2: Connect to the Extender
- Ensure the EX5000 is powered on and running normally.
- Connect your computer to the extender via WiFi (NETGEAR_EXT or extended SSID).
- Temporarily disable VPN or proxy services that might interfere with access to the management page.
Step 3: Log In to the EX5000 Dashboard
- Open a browser and go to http://mywifiext.net or the extender IP (such as 192.168.1.250).
- Log in with your admin username and password (default often admin / password unless changed).
Step 4: Upload the Firmware File
- Navigate to the Firmware Update or Maintenance > Firmware Upgrade section in the dashboard.
- Click Browse or Choose File and select the firmware file you unzipped earlier.
- Click Upload or Update to start the firmware upgrade.
Important: Do not unplug the extender or router, and do not close the browser while the firmware is uploading and installing.
Step 5: Wait for Reboot and Confirm Version
- Wait for the EX5000 to reboot; the Power LED will turn solid again when ready.
- Log back into the dashboard and check the firmware version in the Status or Firmware page to confirm the update.
Step 6: Test WiFi After Update
- Test WiFi coverage and speed in the extended area to make sure everything is working properly.
- If any new issues appear, perform a soft reset and confirm extender placement and router WiFi configuration.
